  4. As bad was failure to cover the border with pre-zeroed artillery and rockets to instantly interdict border intrusions. Failure to properly fortify checkpoints for a full 360 degrees against nation state attacks, failure to ignore holidays and FULLY MAN the appropriate installations (remember the first YK war was also a holiday surprise), failure to train reservists to high standards, and other contributing screwups will have ugly career fallout on those responsbile. Also worth noting is a tiny state like Israel simply CANNOT have defense in depth without a heavily armed Jewish population with ready access to at least the battle rifle loadout common to about 20 million US AR owners and millions more of other models. Israel does not have US crime issues and is thus freer to arm the good guys. That was under recent discussion and now scenes of helpless victims hiding from Hamas with zero self-defense prove the point.

  6. Learn how fires work. Fast burning grasses and brush light off quickly while trees unless densely packed are more difficult to ignite. Most homes ignite from fire impinging the bottom of siding and walls. No mystery at all but people refuse to take hardcore precautions because they foolishly like plants as decoration.

  8. Mental illness isn't courage. As for covering him anyone can be a threat and for all anyone else knew he could have worn an IED or been carrying concealed. Adults have every right to end their own lives. He was far too weak to be in the armed forces but they cannot afford to be picky since political leadership refuse to pay what the market will bear to attract better people which means competing with current civilian compensation. Veterans and senior active leadership have seen the US armed forces deteriorate from within but the public (veterans and active duty excepted) would rather be entertained than ensure quality national defense. Two decades of senior leadership (in and out of uniform) lying to the American public about strategically counterproductive misfought wars should have been a wakeup call but will be forgotten as swiftly as (actual details of) the Viet Nam war.

  12. I would not encourage any female to enlist though I met my wife in the Air Force. I wisely heeded the Marine and Army vets I grew up around by going USAF and saw nothing in my long career to make me question that choice. If you're female your physical disadvantages ensure permanent vulnerability. You are not physically strong enough to defend yourself no matter how fit you are and to assume command has your back is proven to be wishful thinking. Admitting females was required because the public demand it. That does not make enlisting an intelligent decision even if a few do well. It works for some but if you have the qualifications to do well you can do better somewhere else. The armed forces REQUIRE warm bodies to fill personnel slots and that means lowering enlistment standards to meet quota. Unwritten standards run any human organization and scraping the gutter has consequences. It svcks for the good troops who have to deal with the dirtbags because standards must adapt to use the "slowest common denominator". That's why so many good troops don't re-up.

  15. Civilians should not have opinions on military aviation unless they have genuine personal expertise on the subject. The armed forces fly an enormous amount of hours and that makes some fatal mishaps normal. In other news the US loses over thirty thousand people to car crashes but all their survivors drive to the funeral because risk is part of life. I sleep like a baby on military aircraft because I maintained them for a living.

We need a return to the old (expensive but cheaper than crime and violence) asylum system where dangerous crazies can be safely isolated from society instead of warehoused in prisons where they make everything worse.   31. Look at a globe. Geography is far more important than the militarily illiterate imagine. The action was not a government attack (terrorists are not new to NATO and their greatest supporter, the former USSR now the Russian Federation, remains the US greatest strategic enemy).

The roads cars use today were first cut for wagons which are the same basic form factor even back to Roman times. Whatever transport is used, roads will remain necessary for logistics and emergency response.
