@Jupiter-td4kw That was an adult MAN not a boy and when someone is insane risking yourself so they can potentially take you out is absurd. No one knew if he was packing or had an IED and there was no reason to risk getting closer to him. He made the INFORMED ADULT CHOICE to self-immolate.

Mental illness isn't courage. As for covering him anyone can be a threat and for all anyone else knew he could have worn an IED or been carrying concealed. Adults have every right to end their own lives. He was far too weak to be in the armed forces but they cannot afford to be picky since political leadership refuse to pay what the market will bear to attract better people which means competing with current civilian compensation. Veterans and senior active leadership have seen the US armed forces deteriorate from within but the public (veterans and active duty excepted) would rather be entertained than ensure quality national defense. Two decades of senior leadership (in and out of uniform) lying to the American public about strategically counterproductive misfought wars should have been a wakeup call but will be forgotten as swiftly as (actual details of) the Viet Nam war.
