  1. He remains wealthy and can afford to do as he likes. When you are old enough you know how long your resources need to last you comfortably. He does NOT NEED the people he pissed off. However there is no hope anyway and it was a waste of time because the masses are never, ever going to be capable of intelligence or insight.

  2. Most of humanity isn't worth associating with (elections are proof) and the point of prosperity is to afford to live in a like-minded similar high-trust community of those like themselves. Respectful distance is something moderns forget but older societies often embrace.
