Old people don't need sex and there is no reason to bother with other people for mere companionship. It's much wiser to run out the clock free and solo. We won't get less dead by having company, and as I've attended the dying I do not want that drama when I croak

"Average" is generally terrible because the average human is incompetent at more than perhaps one specialty. Strive not to be average. Ruthlessly live BELOW your means such that you become highly efficient. Most people overreach and that's a trap. You need a place to live but buying too much house means a long brutal mortgage. ("Keep it small and own it all.") Do not consider lack of trifles a "sacrifice" and instead take joy in buying wisely. Make every effort to learn DIY so you understand more of your world. Get good and you'll save gobs of money especially over time.

Nice to see so many people are wise enough to be debt-free at 65. Not everyone is foolish. I net only ~$60K in retirement but retired at 47 debt free and half my income is discretionary. When I take my SS next year all of that will be discretionary. I lack nothing and am very comfortable.

Readers should note there are multiple "stealth spam" posts in this and other threads. If you see a financial advisor recommended by name, especially if the post is not in impeccable English, it's a scam. Many Americans do not read well and are vulnerable. AI isn't quite there yet but the safe way is ignore every name recommended by viewer posts. It would be a public service for Azul to mention this or better yet make it a sticky.

FREEDOM and drastically reduced retirement overhead which does go much further than numbers. I live well BELOW my means so I could retire early and debt-free. I bought very modest old homes but on ten and five acre lots so I'd have the value of the land if I sell and enjoy the room and buffer from neighbors. My property overhead is my taxes, maintenance I also do, and electricity. BTW it bears reminding we CAN control having a pension by leading a methodically planned life. I grew up where it was expected that young adults would seek police, fire, postal and other civilian government jobs for the security. If any young person reads this consider that we work so one day we will be free of that burden then figure out the most direct route to secure retirement.

I worked in the used car biz where dealers dress like mechanics but buy hundreds of thousands of dollars in auction inventory. These guys lived "steath wealth". One had a 100+ acre salvage yard in Columbia, SC and drove nice USED vehicles but if a customer needed a part he'd pull the plate, part the car and drive something else. He owned a home in the Bahamas and generally lived very well, but he liked his dealerbros and stayed in business really for fun.
