I've been a mechanic since the '70s (motorbikes, cars, trucks, jet fighters yadda yadda) and they most assuredly DO (Ford cruise control kickoff switches, various makes ignition switches etc thanks to long runs of permanently hot wiring harness) go up in flames without user prompting BUT that typically starts small enough to extinguish with a common extinguisher. The KIND and CHARACTER of BEV fires prevents control by most people including most first responders. I refuse to garage any motor vehicle in ignition range of my house and my two bay garage is all-steel down to the foundation perimeter surrounding the slab. However even that could not contain a BEV fire so if I get one to play with it will live in my open field.

They'd have mostly been shredded by now anyway as it's 2023. Rarities and exotica are mere toys and those who want them should have bought then kept them. They're really just mass-produced consumer goods. OTOH CFC was a boon to auto salvage in the US. Unlike most I worked in the used car business at the time. The bodies, suspensions, interiors and electronics worth saving were typically stripped then the hulls with what remained of the drivetrains (external engine accessories were not required to be destroyed). Sentimental attachment to scrap metal is childish. The vast, vast majority of CFC vehicles were nothing anyone would miss but exaggerating the impact makes great clickbait. If you failed to collect the vehicle of your dreams that's your choice and a few more getting the chop still won't put one in your garage. Typical vehicle life is short not long, enthusiast outliers being irrelevant (and free to have bought then NOT scrapped whatever they wanted to save).

Some wag began spray painting large penises to point out potholes in the US. Those were mysteriously fixed when nothing else had worked. People should not be surprised at Colonial fondness for trucks and SUVs. The US is too vast to have good roads everywhere so the natural response is to adapt the vehicle. Our roads don't curve making sports cars pure posery while a truck combines the virtues of old (and equally large) estate wagons of yore with suspension suiting reality.

Why don't UK residents hate their government the way Americans hate ours? It's your enemy after all, but the whole of Western Europe is oddly submissive.

I would never be in that situation because I consider it human duty to understand at least the basics of everything we personally own and use including (all) the vehicles. I am not a beta tester unless I'm paid to be. I do not care to conform to the herd who are mostly room-temperature IQ and technically ignorant. When I can own a proven, reliable, USED BEV which suits MY use case including ease of maintenance and repair (because I do that for myself and save gobs of cash over time) from a private party I might deign to consider one. Learnt helplessness is a choice.

Turning NeoSoviets into useful dandelion fodder is laudable but this is not the most productive way to fight Russian imperialism.

Why is there no public opposition that matters? Why aren't elected officials properly terrified to push this idiocy?

The public get the worst government they will tolerate. A national tradition of utter subservience to the ruling class doesn't help.

Never be a beta tester even if you are rich. Never buy any model that has not previously beenproven by at least a few million units produced. Never buy anything that has not been a great success in COMMERCIAL fleet service as those buyers are the best informed. Never buy Chinese vehicles unless you are Chinese and patriotic. Most MG sales are in China and should remain there as enriching a government actively genociding minorities is morally questionable. Never fall for the nonsense that a nation to whom Western quality concepts and morality are utterly alien cares about the customer. (If in doubt watch a few SerpentZA and laowhy86 videos, study Uigher genocide etc before considering your next vehicle.) Much love on my part for past glories but MG died with British Leyland and a ChiCom product built by slaves wearing its skinsuit is not a real MG. It's even faker than the pseudo-Norton Commando. (The best revived badge is Triumph, a magnificent job by the great John Bloor.) The reason for the MG badge revival is to milk victims. They're as British as Lord Haw-Haw.
