Few moderns know the US was trolling for contact (note the carriers were at sea) but the extent of destruction was a surprise. The years-long prelude included sending mercenaries (Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers fit that definition precisely) to fight for the Kuomintang against Imperial Japan and embargoing scrap metal and petroleum products. Unlike other situations the Kuomintang were no better than their Maoist opponents, grossly corrupt and unreliable which is why their survivors had to escape to Taiwan.

His replacement may be competent which is even worse. Ultra-nationalists could be much more dangerous. Of course outsiders will be desperate to praise his replacement (like Putin was once praised by useful fools) so the tyrant cycle will repeat as usual.

I miss Bush the Elder, but Junior got the US into two misbegotten foredoomed strategic mistakes. (Iraq was a Pyrrhic victory whose final end state remains uncertain but the war did weaken a key enemy of Israel to which Christianity demands US servitude.)

So easy to say from your basement! Chechnya had the choice of being destroyed or playing ball with the Kremlin. Winning was not an option. Kadyrov could have been a national hero by turning against Putin but you need to remember basically everyone has to be a gangster to survive. The real nationalists were mostly murdered by the FSB. Chechnya was abandoned by the West because Chechens are mostly Muslim so Russians killing Chechens was seen as good news all around. Of course that backfired...

@w.reidripley1968 He seems to hold an ancient conception of the GOP based on the early Cold War, but that party no longer exists and is politically deader than so-called "classic conservatives" like the also very dead Willian Buckley or Zbigniew Brzezinski. The US stopped producing classic conservatives when the GOP filled with escaped Dixiecrats driven off by the Civil Rights Act etc. Their votes were too valuable to stand on non-existent principles. I was alive through the "late early Cold War" and bear personal witness to that dual mistake. The Dems threw away most of their white working class base while the GOP Southern Strategy worked until its objects figured out the game then conquered the Republican Party forever.
