@dinamosflams Vatnik detected. There is no such thing as too much detected. The core problem is Americans forgot why we opposed the Soviets and are easy to manipulate because the average American reads therefore thinks at an ~8th grade level. I was alive when igorance was shameful but that was a long time ago.

WHY IN DETAIL do you consider loss of an indefensible client port an existential crisis for any Russian government? Ports have two major uses, civilian trade through that location and supporting naval operations. The Med is basically a NATO lake and the Russian Federation navy can't defend a coastal target in a shooting conflict with NATO.

Over-extending NATO vs having different treaties would damage the WESTERN, EUROPEAN character of the alliance which exists to defend EUROPE and nations whose global power and culture (the US) is inextricably tied to that core of secular democracy.

Ending the war early would spare Russia to prepare the next war, and the clueless forget the war between Russia against civilization Ukraine is permanent. Russian demographics require far more damage to have serious effect on Russian ability to wage the inevitable next war Russian culture demands Never view Asiatic Russia as if it were part of Europe. The fools who made Putin and his oligarchs billions buying gas betrayed their own cultures for money. It's tough for Ukraine but Russia has not yet sustained serious losses in personnel (they don't care about anyone not a Muscovite) or people who matter. Losses so far are the usual bottom feeders except perhaps a privileged few on Moskva. Russia is not "tired" in the sense Western countries tire of war. It can shrug off half a million KIA but the equipment losses are key because metal is expensive while cannon fodder are either free or people like convicts and oppressed rural minorities Moscow prefers deceased.

It cannot be considered an act of god because either it was a human pilotage error, mechanical malfunction due to human error, or sabotage which of course requires human choice to do so. Where would imaginary celestial friends be directly involved?

The greatest benefit to civilization (to which Asiatic Russia has always been cultural enemy) from this war is the demographic damage from combat losses (limited since Moscow is using it to dispose of groups it doe not want while conserving the Kremlin's Muscovite base) refugees fleeing conscription, and depressed reproduction rate. The Russian way of war has social consequences which are not immediate but difficult to mitigate especially for a kleptocracy. The expended group(s) survivors will be even less fond of central authority while Russia's vast size makes it difficult to govern. Because Russia is an enemy society, not a society with some temporary enemy government, the only way to reduce the threat is for circumstances to depress enemy population. Russian culture ensures there will never be a base for democracy unlike Russia's many Eastern European victims whose desire for freedom from generations of barbarism and genocide coerces them to band together against Moscow.

To precisely what valid strategic purpose?

Good news no matter who did it except for the social traitors in the EU who funded Putin for decades. Energy dependence enables tyrants be they Russian, Saudi, Iranian, Kuwaiti etc. Buying gas from the ontological existential enemy of European civilization was never not stupid, Putin being merely a symptom of the permanent Russian problem which naturally enables tyrants suiting that culture be they Russian or from parts of its empire (Stalin etc).
