The solution is don't live in tourist traps. People make the terrible mistake of wanting to live there KNOWING that costs will continue to rise and if they retire will crush them.

False choice fallacy and stop pretending it's not. Most of those posts are Glavset bots but it's worth remembering Russia has done enormous damage to the US and helped kill and wound nearly every US casualty since WWII. Stop invoking veterans. I am one and I expect vets to be BETTER than ordinary civilians, not worse and not feeling sorry for themselves. The vast majority of vets never saw combat and many self-proclaimed "vets" on the street are fakes. I offer to drive the ones I meet to the VA to get them help (I counsel other vets as I'm legit disabled) and not once have been taken up on the offer.

Planning helps. Not living in cities helps. I retired fully at 47 despite a low income (I'm disabled) because I always planned to find affordable rural land where growth (which does not benefit ordinary citizens, it just increases our cost of living) is slow or nil. I grew up in a beautiful house and learned that a beautiful home does not matter because you pay for an expensive burden leaving you financially vulnerable. OTOH a small ranch with detached garage and shop is easy to care for, cheap and easy to pay off so I did.

Then why am I comfortable at a low income with my cheap old home on cheap rural land I own free and clear? CHOOSING WISELY doesn't SEEM to exist anymore, but people do. Learn only useful things, have only useful interests, focus on learning life skills from DIY to financial planning, and do not live in expensive areas. The whole US is not Florida or CA or NYC. People have choices when they''re young so make the right ones. They are all obvious but folks don't listen. My disabledbros own their lots and trailers too. They ain't pretty but that isn't important to an adult mind. Efficiency and saving money are. Copy success while learning from other peoples mistakes.

@bmoshareholderappleshareho855 No, people are silly and childish, a terrible combination.

Why are we worshipping vets? I'm a career USAF vet but the sun doesn't shine out our butts (and most of our missions do little for the public). As a vet I expect MORE from other vets including self-discipline and planning. The vast majority of vets never see combat in any US war WWII included. The military can be a great career if you do it right. I expect other vets not to make dumb choices like wanting to live in expensive coastal areas. My USAF bros either don't or have high dollar jobs in retirement like working oil rig helicopters. Men and women who proved they can function in a disciplined environment should have and keep their act together. Disability retirement is enough for a small lot and a trailer if you choose the right place so no need for an apartment. I have no idea why people rent those since it's a losing proposition vs even a thrashed trailer or old shotgun shack.

@crand20033 Depends on how you attack the problem. I avoid high COL areas and don't eat out much. My future free range chicken dinners are eating bugs in my back yard. NC has some comfortable areas for that sort of thing but they make for a long commute.

If you have your whole life to get your act together it should be together. If you have rent money you can do what millions of others do and score at least a trailer on a plot in the boonies (where land is cheap and life is easy) instead of renting forever. Renting at 30 while your career is mobile is fine. Renting at 50 and up means you dropped the ball. Apartments are bad so I don't live in one. Cities are bad so I don't live in one (people fail to realize "growth" just increases costs for everyone except the rich who profit). Tourist traps are bad so I don't live in one. I'm in their age range but used my life to not be helpless (it's never too late). If you don't devote your life to preparing for bad times you guarantee bad times. For example my property taxes on five+ acres are about $800/year. If I rented my land I couldn't afford it because rent is always higher than that portion of the property's mortgage. Small lots with old small homes and/or trailers are all over the Southeast and payments are less than rent. Even my civilianbros who are seriously disabled own their own lots and homes because they chose wisely. You don't need a McMansion, just reliable safe shelter but Americans either buy too much house or none at all and lose badly thereby. Think about it and lead a ruthlessly planned life because silly games win silly prizes. You can never start too early.
