  3. It won't work for a torso hit but would a properly applied tourniquet isolate the the limb in time for treatment even if that required amputation? Individual First Aid Kits save many lives in modern warfare and if one is worth having wearing them on a battle belt (ideal for carrying all sorts of civilian items) could be a wise choice. Also worth noting is conventional hypodermic needles are used because they're inexpensive. A safer method would be an autoinjector as used for poison and chem warfare antidotes held in a tube of convenient length and with a safety device that must be activated by the operator (like a trigger operated shroud). Operator approaches target animal then thrusts autoinjector against it from a modest standoff distance. If an autoinjector is not wanted a handled tube with a simple safety and spring loaded plunger would avoid open needles as it could deshroud the needle on injection. A long handle is ergonomically desirable because people usually avoid the awkward act of putting sticks end-first against body parts.
