@Dgreen4154 That depends ENTIRELY on service and specialty. If you never leave barracks except to hit the bars you get what you get. If OTOH you rent on the economy and socialize with the locals it's common for G.I.s to retire in Europe etc after extending and doing repeat tours. Most G.I.s lack the initiative but it's easy to circulate (European mass transit goes basically anywhere so no car required though they're easy to get.)

@unc1221 You forget the military can and do request and get specific bases overseas then frequenly extend. Those without military experience should stay in their lane. Wise G.I.s take advantage of openings when crafting their "dream sheets" and don't hesitate to contact their career field manager to inquire about upcoming openings. There is plenty of "free will" in play since the services benefit from retaining troops who know local areas, like my unit Resource Advisor at Kunsan who spoke fluent Korean and was able to get multiple repeat tours. After he ETSed he stayed and taught English to supplement his retirement and lived very well.
