  1. It's been that way many more years than it hasn't. Compared to the 1970s today is cake. Best to search places you may potentially afford to retire in for as many years as practical. The best way is to live there so I did.

  3. A good way to gauge a location is if you can afford to retire there and own your land and the home on it. Many could throughout history. Things were much worse in the 1970s and only ancient people remember those days.
