@2URLex If you're a serious enthusiast then you're a mechanic as I am (it's serious fun and saves tons of money I can roll into my vehicle fleet) and can do your own drivetrain swap if you life in a free state (or can title and register in one). All those JDM drivetrains don't get shipped to the US by accident. Swapping engines into Toyotas goes back decades (Novak and Advance Adapters helped greatly). It's never too late to learn to wrench and the tools and equipment pay for themselves surprisingly fast.

I scan or photocopy fresh gaskets before use so I've a permanent reference, and for simple ones save a good gasket as a pattern. 3D printing gaskets and gasket templates is becoming common so when I figure out how to scan gaskets I'll do that, too.

Like typical GM cars of the era Fiero has poor build quality. That was far from new. Before Fiero the Corvair could have been America's Porsche (the drivetrain was fine, the rest was not fine). American car makers seem to have resented quality. Even the trucks had issues (much love for my Chevy and GM trucks but the bodies rust like mad if you live where there's winter).

Miata was a genius move. The market was always there! It had been forgotten because the non-Japanese predecessor companies made awful junk, some of which I wrenched on as a lad. Customers used to LOVE lightweight sports cars but Italian and British autos were garbage by US reliability standards no matter how much fun or how pretty they were. Miata is a lightweight sports car that is reliable and practical to daily drive. Quality, styling and fun are why it's so successful.

Customers buy based on styling first and you cannot go wrong with classic lines. Customers today are tech-illiterates for the vast part but they gladly spend money on esthetics so give them what they will pay for.
