  1. Customers are no longer technically literate so they are incapable of discriminating between quality and junk. Junk is victorious because industry has been ruined by greedy gasworthy MBA parasites. OTOH when an appliance was MUCH more valuable (in the 1940s etc buying a fridge was a big deal) Americans expected quality. Today only tradesmen even know what quality looks like if they're old enough to remember it.
