That's why I do (all) my own maintenance. I've saved so much I can buy any tool I want then keep that tool for life. It's easier than ever to learn (I started long before the internet) with videos while online shopping and delivery means far less physical shopping at brick and mortar stores.

FOMO buyers became FAFO buyers who are SOL.

^Wisdom right there.

Most people are silly and ignorant. People broke today had years to prepare and learn how to be versatile, live wisely, and to never waste money buying junk they don't need to impress people they shouldn't care about. Don't be like most people because most people are trifling.

Buy cheap, renovate yourself, pay it down quickly then when you get old you have no mortgage OR rent. Worked a treat for me because I don't need to make payments on some McMansion I would never own.

So why do you live there?

Adults who should know better fail to study their prospective locations. Cities are bad because they only get more expensive so I don't live in one (after escaping New Jersey in my youth). Even people good at one thing which made them bank are often helpless beyond that, but helplessness is a choice.

These problems are easily dealt with by not living there. Fires are guaranteed, inevitable and will remain a permanent threat. The rich make enough not to care so despite it being affordable (for them) to build fireproof (not resistant which is not the same) homes most prefer silly choices. Not being rich I have zero need to live where they drive everyone's costs higher.

Buying in areas hit once means you'll eventually get zapped. Everyone is free to study hurricane maps, storm surge maps, flood plain maps, local history, property elevations etc so I did before buying. The only reason most people moved to Florida is the rest of the ignorant herd moved to Florida. I do not follow herds because I'm not a sheep.

Remote skilled tech workers who are valuable should WFH and do so to the benefit of their employers who need not waste money on traditional office infrastructure. Most workers are not really technical people, they just enter and process data. Most workers are NOT valuable and would be laid off with or without WFH as the market changes. The difference is their employers aren't stuck with useless expensive office space. Real tech workers (important software devs etc employed at high salaries because they generate much more than they cost) cost LESS when WFH. OTOH expendable drones are easy to fire and hire so they're easily fired and hired. If you fail to learn skills vital to the economy then YOU aren't vital to the economy. If you fail to constantly add to your skills and abilities you're less valuable than someone who does. If you are just a an office drone with or without a formal office, those are easy to replace and easy to hire and fire as needed. Those jobs are NOT required to be maintained long term. They do not require difficult skills, just fingers, eyes and a computer. WFH employees in those jobs did exactly the same thing when they commuted. Email and messaging remain email and messaging.

@fineart6867 ^This. I've saved tens of thousands doing all my own work and the money saved buys nearly any tool one could want to make it easy.

@patrickp8315 Please define what you imagine limits the hypothetical pie size.

Good for the workers who won their contract! Holiday season hires are normally laid off. This is SUPPOSED to happen every year because sales volume drops, and now COVID lockdowns are over. There is no magic planet where companies should waste money on workers they don't need and bankrupting the business. Workers need to understand they are hired out of need and need changes seasonally. Fruit pickers don't expect to pick out of season when there is nothing to pick. Most consumer goods purchases are not necessary and UPS EXISTS TO HAUL CONSUMER GOODS. Holiday spending on consumer goods drops off after the holidays. In other news water is wet. I get the whole bucket of crabs thing where the losers resent the winners getting a better contract (if your pay does not match inflation every year is a pay cut in constant dollars, but find it hilarious the public still don't understand how the Christmas season works.
