If those opposed to the Taliban had fought with the same will, organization and strategy they would have won. They chose otherwise and the rest is history. Secular democracy only suits modern cultures which already have precursor social structures in place by the desire of the locals. There is no way to execute a fundamentally foolish mission wrong for a culture, so it failed. The lesson is that it CANNOT be done "right" and humans must be dealt with as they are. A punitive mission would have been understood, but naive NeoCon messianic "nation building" was doomed before it started. Talibs brought order in traditional ways, the government was corrupt and ignored the villages (just like in South Viet Nam, another place where a Maoist style strategy succeeded).
