  1. If the US objected to the drug trade its policies would not make it incredibly lucrative. Thanks to public ignorance of basic economics (and because punishing people we don't like is always delicious fun!) US policies on booze were a gift to the Mafia during Prohibition in the way US drug policies enrich the cartels. Cartels without money would evaporate, but the US prefers to reinforce failure by punitive policies which raise retail costs which increase wholesale profits which make the tons of money involved well worth killing over. US drug policy is the equivalent of someone punching themselves in the balls then punching even harder so make the pain go away.
