  1.  @ryanjg87  East Germany's Berlin Wall was to keep people IN and prevent them from escaping. Those who fled were shot and and sometimes killed. I served in West Germany during the early half (it never ended) of the Cold War. The free half of Germany were delightful hosts and welcomed their fellow escaping Soviet rule in the Warsaw Pact.

  2. Walls may not be perfect but if they are guarded by human pickets work effectively. The Berlin Wall is a famous example. International critics object to nations controlling their own borders. When the choice is between your own people surviving or chaos for everyone that is no choice at all.
