@bostonrailfan2427 People are punished for getting caught. Many a fragging was never solved if we want a land-based comparison.

Why would hatches and everything else not be completely secured in port every time? What special kind of idiocy would defer that action until a vessel was underway? Have regs changed to address that? The only possible non-excuse might be the labor involved. Can anyone clarify?

Ship losses are socially interesting. If the same body count were the product of a bus crash it's briefly news, but put them in a tin can or an aircraft (much worse because it triggers the phobic) and it's a question for the ages. Given the vast number of vessels built since 1900 it's a wonder more don't sink, not that some sink in entertaining ways. Titanic tops the crop for sinkings whose entertainment value to humanity dwarfs the minor human loss with the obsessed like Stockton Rush sometimes joining the original dead pile.

@Engine33Truck Guess what has no accompanying visual reference for size? Any vessel at sea without other objects in sight.

Keep in mind these vessels made all (survivng) concerned enough money to take the risk. What were common ore vessel wages for various ranks?

Easier to ditch it in the sea. Corpses aren't very interesting after your first couple. Everyone dies and almost all of us are disposed of with or without ritual by other humans. No way I'm spending time next to that much rotten meat.

Contemporary tech was impressively primitive by modern standards, maintenance-intensive and had poor reliability. Even operatiing trains was dangerous, let alone shipping. Look over machinery of the early 1900s and ignore survivor bias. It's impressive it worked at all, the major exceptions being overbuilt hydroelectric plant some of which remains in use.

The only reason not to close covers before sailing would be time and time is money. Always follow money. The hatch covers are a poor design which should be BOLTED or otherwise positively retained buy many independent fasteners.
