The "no space" meme is a myth because when the only game in town was a full desktop or tower those fit the same dorm rooms just fine! I was alive then and will so testify under penalty of perjury. Even a tower only occupies a couple of cubic feet at the most and they can be placed or hung anywhere. Space is an excuse to mask desire for minimalist esthetics and function be damned. Most "students" are conformist adult children who follow the currently Apple-centric herd. Moving a reasonable size workstation is simply not difficult and for a notebook to be much use one needs a proper external monitor or two and external peripherals producing a similar result. All those things (including heavy CRT monitors !) were routinely carried to LAN parties.

For a professional it's worth reminding that $1500 is pocket change for a tool that makes profit. Mechanics spend thrice that on one scanner. I use desktop peripherals at home for ergonomics (at which no notebook can compare) even for my notebooks. For serious performance it's easy to remote into a stout server and let that do the heavy lifting (and file storage).

Most users do not have a real use case for Linux. I do and have used it since 1999 but I don't pretend normals need much more than a phone. Techies (not every computer user is really a techie) will self-select so I don't evangelize. The world has enough annoying noobs demanding tools for professionals be dumbed down for morons. They're fine with Windows, Mac and Android. Laptop ergonomics are inherently shit so even those are best used with desktop peripherals. Notebooks do have the advantage of a built-in UPS where that matters. In 2023 it's trivial to wallow in multiple desktops and notebooks by acquiring good used hardware then installing Linux on it so I do. (Windows is best confined to VMs for where a specific tool requires it.) Worth noting is a desktop or server can be reduced to zero footprint by hanging it on a wall. Works very nicely for 1U servers which so elevated are well out of harms way.

"People who want powerful hardware and don't know Apple aren't playing fairly" are ignorant by choice or too rich to care. For a professional making money the price of hardware is background noise. As a work tool the cost of a personal computer is trivial. Note independent auto mechanics often have tens of thousands of dollars in tools they paid for and because those tools turn a profit there is no problem.
