  1. I retired debt free in my forties because I consider unproductive mortgage debt foolish. I don't live in cities because that's just prison with extra steps. Instead I always planned for a rural or semi-rural home in a low or no growth area because growth is bad for existing homeowners unless/until they planned to sell in a high market AND managed to do that. I do not want my home to increase in value because I did not buy for resale. I do want acreage and privacy which no city offers. Most people are lemmings but I've no desire to copy the herds mistakes (like ARMs which bit back hard in the 2008 recession). In a city I'd have to sell my home then find another so any profit is promptly lost.
