  2. Where do you live? Prices are regional. For example I chose a red state and my COL remains dirt cheap. Despite being poor by US standards (disabled retiree who would much rather be working because I enjoy aviation) half my income is disposable. If I still lived in North Jersey I couldn't afford gutter space.

  4.  @ashleysanford8645  What makes buying eggs mandatory? I like them but survival and pleasure are not the same. BTW you like quality food DIY is a great way to get it for next to nothing. It's also fun. For example if you keep hens (only roosters crow) eggs become so cheap I give dozens to neighbors. The old custom of Victory Gardens and their predecessors pays off and is why many older suburban homes have back yards large enough for a serious garden or greenhouse. If your municipality objects to small numbers of pet chickens many of those ordinances have been changed by public pressure. The backyard chicken community is global and pretty cool. The eggs are far better than store eggs which I find too bland to eat. Chickens also eat nearly all food scraps. My trash never stinks, my yard is bug and mouse-free (chickens love mice!) and life is comfy.
