  1. When the US makes garbage it's due to greed. When Germany makes garbage it's due to a fetish for excessive complexity and apparently utter hatred for the mechanics tasked with repairing and maintaining their products. Germans are far too proud to own their mistakes. They COULD take a cue from their brilliant, mechanically elegant past successes but that would require introspection and humility. Idiocy like timing chains at the back of the engine is inexcusably poor engineering. Quality is always a choice.

  2. Germany changed. I quite enjoyed my two years there in the 1980s with the USAF but that era was still one of simple mechanical elegance even with cheap cars. Contemplate the single cam liquid cooled VW four whose block could be a diesel, carbed gasser or Bosch mechanical injection gasser. They were simple, RUGGED and very easy to wrench. That was revolution. Today German vehicles are merely elaborate, grotesquely overcomplicated WITHOUT REASON and absolutely horrible for mechanics. Automakers do not care at all about their vehicles after they're sold and it shows. That's also why so many mechanics are leaving the industry for places their increasingly varied skills are properly compensated.

  3. Because the ideologues who want a BEV already own one and the rest don't NEED one. Unless and until a BEV does EVERYTHING better than my ICE truck fleet I don't need one.
