  1. America was not settled by people looking for social freedom. It was settled by colonialists seeking land and wealth and messianic religious fanatics. The British Crown wisely used the Colonies as a dumping ground for its religious opponents like the Puritans. This so affect US culture that even US urbanites are really quite rustic and our entire culture is prudish and fanatical about how each group DEMANDS sex be dealt with. The utter collapse of the US primary education system (already a joke by German standards, I was stationed in West Germany for two years and tried to extend) does not help as only some of the wealthy conceive of education beyond job training. Prudishness and ignorance are bedfellows. The implosion of primary education is why our current electorate read therefore think at about US 8th grade level. This drives the inevitable slide to populism by the terrified ignorant masses so don't expect improvement. Americans (G.I.s stationed overseas etc excepted) are anti-cosmopolitan and their discourse is at the typical Youtube comment level. Things are not improving as the US is bitterly anti-intellectual and has no intellectuals worth mentioning, just social media entertainers pandering to morons craving affirmation. Nobody really minds so this state of affairs is permanent. The American people can only care about technology and money. The exceptions know we prove the rule.

  2. It was an honor to defend West Germany in the 1980s when I was stationed at Sembach. Then as now US forces are an insurance policy against the PERMANENT Russian threat which it's worth reminding dates back to ancient times. Today we see expecting Russia to evolve was a mistake and Putin's attempt to rebuild the USSR (and lest we forget, reconquer the Warsaw Pact!) renews the threat to Germany so withdrawal would have been a mistake. Germany and the rest of NATO really should restore their armed forces to effective levels because they were all gutted. Any Germans doubting this are invited to ask their own military personnel. While pivoting from US bases to contain Russia is in US interest that is also COMPLETELY in German interest. Germans alive when the Red Army was poised to smash through the Fulda Gap understand that threat hence the aid to Ukraine.
