  2. Many far older machines work every day but they're properly maintained and properly operated. It's quite easy to inspect aircraft (I did it for a living) and measure wear before things get out of hand. Operators cannot accidentally ignore inspections and time change requirements so if mechanical failure is the immediate cause then maintenance malpractice is likely the root cause. No one is forced to fly for convenience!
