The GM upfitters manual specifies butt joints as factory best practices. but of course with L-style and sometimes inverted channel reinforcements which are even stronger than flat fishplates. C-channels are of course the way to reinforce a finished joint. Chassis Best Practices 2018: https://www.gmupfitter.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/2018_Chassis_BstPrac_093017.pdf A weld properly done should be stronger than parent metal and MANY successful frame mods are done with butt welds. My pipeliner welding instructor (who could weld the proverbial cats ass to a plate glass window if they made filler rod for cat, maybe cutoff tails would work) did many that way on his ranch while taking a break from the road. 70 or 80 series stick rod or ER70 wire got it done over many decades.
