Live in a red state where self-defense and defense of property is legal and those problems go away. There is good reason I do not live in a walkable or crowded area. If you cannot freely shoot rifle practice in your own back yard it IS time to move. I escaped the NY metro area decades ago because everything that happened since was obvious. I don't need a concierge to protect my mail. That reflects failure.

@jjred233 I maintain my own property which anyone determined to learn can do and should consider to slash their cost of living. My yearly maintenance cost is so little I don't notice it and because of that when I finally had to pay a deep well driller had the cash handy for that.

The most common mistake I see is lack of personal skill diversification. Everything one learns and does can be useful but most people accept "learned helplessness". Another is buying far too much house. I grew up in a beautiful upper middle class home built in 1926 but don't want one because at that point the house owns you and is a huge money pit including taxes. I chose single storey homes because stairs GUARANTEE old people will slip and fall at least once. That's why many elders stay on the ground floor. The only reason to want multi-storey residences is lack of land which I made sure is not a problem. I chose agricultural-zoned property for additional freedom (like building my home welding and machine shop and having many vehicles), I knew living on the coast guarantees storms so I don't. I knew moving to high growth areas would make retirement unaffordable so I did not. Growth only benefits developers. I knew taxes in expensive hoods are brutal so I live in a rural area. I know neighbors are useless annoyances so mine are few, far between and stable in the traditional meaning of the term. Cheer up. If you play it right you can (because my poorbros have for decades) live comfortably for small money if you choose wisely. For example my HS dropout former musician bro does fine on disability and owns his land and trailer free and clear. Learn from smart poor folks.

The remaining workers will be fine. Fast food isn't supposed to be a career and for anyone of reasonable intelligence and determination, it is not. Bonus, fewer customers for fattening factory pseudo-food they shouldn't be eating as much of anyway. Carb overload is not our friend. Look at 1970s yearbooks for what Americans USED to look like.

Rich people problems. They'll be fine while others sell out, cash out and move to a wiser location. Smart people avoid cities so I did. Smart people avoid leftists states so I did and that let me retire in my forties. Plan coldly and never follow the herd.

@cjhoward409 Wise are those who choose advance planning and hardcore DIY. (I recommend an auto shop class to everyone because the many systems on vehicles require skills useful elsewhere.) My newest trucks are 2000 models and because I opportunistically acquired more than one downtime is never an issue. I opportunistically buy appliances BEFORE I need them since I know my equipment use rate. So do my poorbros because people in farm country are expected not to choose helplessness. Doing this nearly ends surprise expenses and leaves money for savings. I just dropped ten grand on two deep wells because my ancient shallow wells were failing (which was something of a surprise since low flow hadn't been much issue) and that did not hurt a bit. I did not have to pay an electrician or plumber to connect them to my houses because I dug the trenches (by hand for exercise) then plumbed and wired to my panels for the cost of parts. This only requires determination (I'm old and disabled but quite patient) so nearly anyone can do likewise (which I know from training trades students at my local CC).

@keysautorepair6038 There are plenty of Americans making much more. BTW I thank my (successful shop owner) auto mechanic friends for chasing me away from making that a career. Aircraft are much easier to work on than modern automotive abominations and fixing fighters for a living much more fun.

@MX-CO How can you change what you do to your advantage?

Facts! ^ I do the same and planned it for decades.

@guyz7777 Is "nowhere" supposed to mean something? How old are you?

@JNoMooreNumbers We do not NEED most consumer garbage. We do not NEED luxury foods.

Fast food in the US was always garbage but it's convenient garbage. The rest of the economy is strong. Fast foods selling point was always CONVENIENCE, not cheapness. It was never intelligent to live off it and as soon as that got popular the US got OBESE, DIABETIC and UNHEALTHY. Good riddance.

So what? It's just normal market saturation thinning the herd. Auto parts store realignments are common. Smart retailers have plenty of business because they win on customer service, like the old hardware store in my town whose owner was delighted at Lowes building a store a block away. He was right of course and personal service keeps his parking lot full of customers.

Americans love debt for things they do not need, especially "too much car", "too much house" and "too many overpriced toys". Toys should be a self-reward for being debt-free. Stupid scam rituals like getting ripped off for entertainment at Disney or thinking diamonds are a flex (because they don't know how DeBeers markets them). Be smart, live BELOW your means and enjoy the freedom that brings. I much prefer my rural acreage and tiny property tax to brutally expensive urban living. I'm low income by US standards but about half that is discretionary because wise planning pays off. Put income security first, get smart and proudly live cheap.
