The most common mistake I see is lack of personal skill diversification. Everything one learns and does can be useful but most people accept "learned helplessness". Another is buying far too much house. I grew up in a beautiful upper middle class home built in 1926 but don't want one because at that point the house owns you and is a huge money pit including taxes. I chose single storey homes because stairs GUARANTEE old people will slip and fall at least once. That's why many elders stay on the ground floor. The only reason to want multi-storey residences is lack of land which I made sure is not a problem. I chose agricultural-zoned property for additional freedom (like building my home welding and machine shop and having many vehicles), I knew living on the coast guarantees storms so I don't. I knew moving to high growth areas would make retirement unaffordable so I did not. Growth only benefits developers. I knew taxes in expensive hoods are brutal so I live in a rural area. I know neighbors are useless annoyances so mine are few, far between and stable in the traditional meaning of the term. Cheer up. If you play it right you can (because my poorbros have for decades) live comfortably for small money if you choose wisely. For example my HS dropout former musician bro does fine on disability and owns his land and trailer free and clear. Learn from smart poor folks.
