@Wolf-yw7en You'd be wise to put those bits back together or find someone who can as that's either a nice family artifact or an easy sale for good money. Alternate option, donate to an Australian war museum and someone will put it back to period condition.

@echohunter4199 Consaguinity is a real and major issue. DNA is hard to hide...

Honors are mere tools to inspire desired conduct. They can be revoked as expedient or allowed to fade by non-renewal. The dead are dead and only "matter" to the extent they and their acts can be usefully exploited. Honor is a social tool necessary to leading the oh so very simple masses whose low intelligence is not a choice hence not their fault, but DEMANDS they be dealt with in ways they approve of. Humans demand affirmation so do what works. When what works changes, do that instead. Public memory unprompted is short. WWII is ancient history soon to pass from living memory so the way it is seen may be freely modified as expedient. Objective truth is for science. Expedient truth is for politics. Do note that necessity makes strange bedfellows and the USSR was at least as horrid as the Third Reich and its successor Russian Federation is genocidal to this day. That requires cold pragmatism for Western civilization to survive its nuclear nemesis.

Even heavy aircraft maintenance and repair can be dispersed to multiple locations if someone thinks to do it. Nearly any fighter component can be repaired or replaced in the field. Engine R&I dollies and aircraft jacks are pretty basic and easy to transport. RAF Gutersloh left a mobile maintenance setup on lorries in the 1980s to immediately drive off-base when if war broke out. Wise Ukrainian aircraft maintenance officers will obtain duplicate technical orders and as much duplicate equipment and test equipment as practical then disperse it. Nearly all fighter maintenance equipment items will fit in a box truck and commercial cranes can be used for heavy lifting. ABDR trailers are simple and cheap to equip too.

I wouldn't think that because it's not a large bomb, just a steel can quite capable of dampening any internal detonation of its remaining munitions if any. The world doesn't revolve around diverting real money and real people to retrieve every artifact to entertain plebs.

That's just an excuse to be entertained at considerable financial expense to someone else. There's nothing "tremendous" about dragging magnetometers etc while hunting a lump of steel then paying tens of thousands of Euros to rent barges with cranes to retrieve it. There are plenty of worthwhile UXO removal opportunities throughout Germany and Europe, including some new ones in the East.

BTW military power is far more important than space exploration because US/NATO military power does useful things like containing the USSR and Communits China then and the Russian Federation and Communist China today. German scientists helped save Western civilization just not in the way they had in mind in 1939. The IRBM then ICBM German expats helped build are why there IS a "USA" in 2024. That is history also worth noting. No need to praise them but knowing facts is useful. Humanity is intrinsically savage and evil, all of it, merely differing by degree. Therefore all who would survive must understand we are of nature, and nature is run by fang and claw. Might makes right irrelevant.

The WWII stuff pays the bills but this and other recent histories not effectively covered elsewhere offer valuable insights and are short enough civilian professionals could use them as starting points when trying to understand issues in their AO.

@shannonquinn8687 In that case finding the location on Google earth would be as easy as me remembering the landmark structures at Sembach AB on the airfield side where I worked before the airfield was demolished. Name the Barracks then note the location or approximate location.

@slappy8941 Bad analogy but these days WWII is mostly perceived as a video game. There was every reason to snuff genocidal occupiers so some people quite reasonably did. Would you trivialize Ukraine under Stalin or Putin the same way?
