  4. When both were still being made the Chiefs looked great but if you see inside one you learn why they made no horsepower. Take apart a Knuck or Pan next to an Indian Chief flathead or pull up interior pics to see why Indian died and HD survived. Indian flateads use low speed bushings where HD used Timken tapered rollers. Indian ran a 3-speed crashbox transmission while HD's four speed used dog clutches and is so rugged it was basically the same (ratchet top swap to cowpie top excepted) into the 1980s and didn't need beefing to handle much larger displacement strokers. There are far too many old biker wives tales so best to research EVERYTHING anyone says unless they supply a credible citation.

  5. Older HDs are essentially lifetime bikes thanks to the independent aftermarket. I haven't been inside a dealership more than 10 times since 1988 when I bought the FXR I still ride, and I've been wrenching them since 1981. Pre-woke HDs are basically immortal. I own six plus a couple in parts.

  6. AMF saved the company from family mismanagement but didn't know how to run it and had labor problems. The buyout at the time was by the same executives but via the Evo they saved HD from AMF who previously saved HD. I was wrenching then and quite amused.
