  1. The US didn't leave SAMs this time (there being no reason to do so) and the rest of the gear is obsolete like HMMWV junk light trucks. It has symbolism to Bubba but the US has no need for that gear which is why it got FMSed in the first place. JLTV is the replacement for HMMWV and remedies the faults of a weak NATO liaison vehicle never intended for direct combat and very bad at surviving attack (as demonstrated from Mogadishu to present day).. I actually DO remember and have studied both wars. Operation Cyclone was a bargain against the Soviet Union and carried out by competent operatives. What should never have happened is "nation building" which is a direct assault on local culture hence doomed to failure.

  3. Cartels are DISCIPLINED, ORGANIZED, and so effective they are the local government in many areas. They survive under the footprint of a similarly degenerate central government and against competing warlords. Cartels are skilled, adaptive and they are above all successful. The ANA have nothing to fight for and it shows. The cartels have survival to fight for and it shows.

  4. One thing also driving the crisis which gets near zero attention is lack of accessible, affordable medical care aggravated by pain doctors afraid to prescribe effective medicine. Opiates used for their medical purpose are irreplaceable, but the innocent people like myself in chronic pain will have nowhere else to go when they cannot get effective pain meds. While I'm covered thanks to Tricare most Americans have job-contingent medical insurance so they're walking a tightrope. There are pain levels which compel even dangerous action to counter them, which after all is the evolved purpose of the pain reaction to stimuli. Given sufficient pain over sufficient time (often years) anyone would take any risk to reduce it.

  8. We have already had this adventure with alcohol, but like alcohol Prohibition the opponents of cannabis are purely motivated by spite. Americans (other than the hardcore in the Midwest) do not really care about personal freedom but do care about inflicting their views on everyone else. The British Crown rightly dumped its religious fanatics in the Colonies so their Christian Taliban would instead serve the Empire. (That they blew it with taxation is another story) and the US will forever suffer the consequences.

  10. Word to silly people. DO NOT "SMOKE" when that is high risk or annoying to the humans you live with. Ingestion can be discreet with equal or much stronger effects and you don't stink out your house. Delta 9 gummies for example work a treat and are why I can get a little rest despite chronic (no pun intended!) pain and living in a state that's so backward half the population are nostalgic for slavery. Legal gummies also why I can manage sever chronic pain (multiple fusions, spine like a house of cards) flareups without taking more opiates (most of the time). Smoking is unkind to your lungs and wastes most of the cannabis. BTW lock up thy materials where your snotlings cannot find them no matter what they are. Someone will ALWAYS do the stupid thing because most humans are unintelligent, but that someone need not be you if you give some thought to the challenges.

  11. FRACKING killed coal because gas is vastly easier to extract, transport and use. Appalachian geography is why it was always reliant on resource extraction. That geography will not change so the choices are adapt or move. As with EVERY region reliant on resource extraction and/or agrarian jobs there was no economic diversification and no intellectual growth because no one wanted to invest in education. It's too late today. Insurers won't underwrite new coal power plants which already are expensive maintenance nightmares. Change is hard. Universal basic income will eventually be necessary and it's creeping in by other forms.

  12. Still a CAREER burglar and arsonist so the world is better off. The first arson like all arson should have gotten life in the slammer. He IS a repeat offender and those commit more crimes than they do time for. Trash aren't redeemable and his sentence spared future victims. Sometimes technical injustice nets a just result. "Three strikes" laws clean the streets and would have removed him long before.
