  1. Democrats have the same problem the GOP has, that the typical American reads therefore thinks at roughly 8th grade level. The other Democrat problem is they don't have a base. They have multiple groups to pander to but must appeal to the powerful far Left who set policy like de-facto open borders which (let this sink in) are even more important than defending the West from a NeoSoviet respawn (or Dems would yield on border control). Generating a candidate who can market the left (there are no moderate Democrats) effectively is so difficult they had to run Biden who is a relic from the early Cold War and as such looked "safe" instead.
