  1. The American people want armed forces so they should PAY for them. Modern war requires career professionals not conscript cannon fodder. Expecting anyone to work for nothing is childish and the price of maintaining a career force is driven by the labor market. In older eras when more Americans had military experience that was generally understood. Bottom line is always compensation. If you want people to join the service with the worst quality of life and the lowest enlistment standards (there was never a choice on that due to having so many support slots to fill) then you PAY what the market will bear. Anyone fit to enlist can make more money elsewhere so many do. Everyone who does not enlist is voting by inaction for better pay and benefits. If you want the armed forces to improve, don't join them. That is the ONLY thing that ever drove compensation increases. If enough people don't enlist, bonuses and pay increase. If enough people don't re-enlist, SRBs etc go up to compensate.
