An OTR trucker is instantly mobile and can stack enough (drive for a company and let them take the financial risk) to buy in elsewhere. Anyone young can (if they're serious) find a gig that's mobile, from the Merchant Marine and other maritime gigs to the armed forces. People have been leaving the metro area for hundreds of years because they manned up and took action. The younger you leave the better but the lower costs elsewhere mean your assets go farther. Immigrants leave their country and have since long before they got paid to come here. Americans are mostly just afraid of change and use other excuses to stay until they get forced out like in Newark or Detroit after the riots.

Upstate was where the NYC wealthy had their summer estates since the 1800s to escape the crowding, smog and crime of the city. It's a different better world like rural parts of any other state in the Northeast.

If you're that old how do you not remember walking past stripped cars, the constant arsons, and the Bronx especially being so bad that it was barely lit at night except for street lights? Kitty Genovese ring any bells? I didn't get messed with but I'm 6'2", looked intimidating and had proper street manners (give respect, get respect). The rose tinted glasses of nostalgia for one's youth don't change the normal reality of those days. The VOTERS chose their sanctuary city status, NYC is immensely wealthy and can afford it by raising taxes if necessary.   23. NYC returning to historic normal. I'm amused anyone doesn't know this. I escaped the metro area when it was much more violent (at least the music scene was decent) forty years ago. This is a normal urban cycle and smart people LEAVE to avoid it. The traditional way was to make your money in the city then cash out and retire elsewhere, even better if you live in the burbs and commute. Unless you're making serious money there is no intelligent reason to live in urban America. You can't fix normal social cycles but you can cash out and enjoy the rest of America.

I grew up in a very nice north Jersey suburb but those are totally restrictive ( I find the idea of renting a single garage bay obscenely ridiculous) so i left that overtaxed expensive over-regulated corrupt place. I bought cheap old homes needing work in NC then SC over the years and did the work (which is simply like most things a matter of DECIDING to learn ho then making the effort) which saves absurd amounts of money. If you need a new personal capability then choose to add it. Perfectly ordinary people do nearly every task in civilization which means others can learn them too.

  26. Apartments are prisons like "condos" (a fancy word for apartment) and as that building deteriorates your fees skyrocket. The whole condo concept is a scam and that it works for a few doesn't make it wise when you own a proper house and enough land for to buffer against neighbors (I live on just under six acres). When you do not own the ENTIRE structure you live in you really have nothing because you are at someone elses mercy. Instead, make sure your property is easy for you to care for. For example if you have overgrown trees cut them down before removal gets really expensive, and cut down every tree in falling range of your home. Most people forget to look up then get hit with brutal arborist bills in their old age after what used to be a comfy esthetic feature turns into a threat. Replanting away from structures gets a nice visual barrier far enough out to be safe.

Young people can choose from mobile jobs most don't think of like the Merchant Marine, trucking (not easy but it lets you travel then decide where you want to live since it pays well enough), the armed forces, or the trades (community college is basically free, I attended, volunteered at and worked for one). For women nursing and other medical fields always need workers.

Citation needed since I've lived on the outskirts (the fewer neighbors the better) of several small towns after escaping the NY metro area long ago. My grocery expenses are about 400 a month eating whatever I feel like buying. My property tax (on just under six acres with two modest homes, two bay garage and three workshops I built) is about $800/year. Despite making less than $70K in retirement about half my income is discretionary and I'm debt free. That was the plan when I escaped urban life and has been a complete success. Millions of other Americans do likewise but we don't make the news. Compare and contrast with the NY metro area I left which was so crowded then it was common for people to rent garage space. My garage is bigger than most urban apartments. I haven't needed to parallel park since the 1980s. I grew up in a very nice suburb (Rutherford, NJ) which still is. In 2000 the property taxes on my parents home was over ten grand a year (which is why my father sold it and escaped to Virginia).

Mandating AC also mandates an electrical system which can power the ENTIRE load for the TOTAL number of AC units. Central air is even more absurdly expensive in total and the bonus for landlords is installing central air is it will require people to MOVE OUT during construction which then frees the apartment to rent at the higher rate.

Urban space is so rare I could never afford to build my workshops etc for personal enjoyment if I lived there, so I don't, See a pattern? If you know urban history NYC was never good, just differently bad. Urban hives cannot be made good, so leave them for people too silly to figure that out. The only reason people cling to where wise humans do not is fear of change. You have a lifetime not to live in a city or urban area, but the sooner you figure that out the better your life and especially personal economy will be. Democratic voters decide NYCs fate. They deserve what their unwisdom gets them but they are not entitled to me living in the metro area to support their nonsense with my tax money. Crime can never be stopped for good. Anyone who can WFH reduces traffic by not being part of it, reduces apartment demand by not needing one, and in general has zero negative impact. It was far more dangerous and nastier in the 1970s/80s which were far less nastier than say the early 1900s. It's a city. Cities are bad unless you are wealthy (the reason the rich had mansions in north Jersey and upstate New York though they worked in the city). There is no solution as the place is too big to fix and too economically important for many businesses to leave (though WFH from the burbs is a fine response). NYC is where poor people ended up by mistake (like lack of information) or were born but too afraid of change to leave. The individual solution is 100-percent effective.   92. I have over two years (that ain't much) deployed in tents and did not consider that uncomfortable. Close the borders. Stop electing Democrats (won't happen because most of the public are disgustingly foolish chumps) and in NYCs case RESCIND THE ED KOCH SANCTUARY CITY EXECUTIVE ORDER which can be done by the mayor with a stroke of a pen. New York voters chose this and I'm laughing. I escaped the metro area long ago because it was doomed then, too.

  97. There is OUTSIDE CITIES. I'm part of that middle class because I manned up and (this is not hard) just left. Refugees leave their countries but far too many Americans are frightened rabbits who won't even move to better areas of their own state. My property taxes on ~six acres are less than a grand a year. My mortgage was never as high as NYC apartment rent. I can only conclude people are too foolish to move in their own country. No one has to live in NYC, SF, LA etc so don't live there.

  98. The US isn't "failing" and NYC used to be far worse in the 1980s. What is failing is silly people insist in living there. Think about it. Refugees can change nations but most Americans are afraid to leave their home towns so instead of aggressively changing their circumstance they just follow the herd.

  101. Dear tourists, there is nothing worth travelling to NYC to see. I lived in the area for decades. It used to be nice but go see the REST of the USA which has magnificent scenery. You can get just as drunk at a proper party (Oktoberfest in Germany makes Mardi Gras look like a trailer park) under more civilized conditions. Search "Paris shock syndrome" because it's similar. Naive people expect something cool and fun then reality hits hard. Wise Americans left the metro area decades ago but it went into brief remission and since there is no primary education here worthy of mention naive youngsters made the mistake of moving in. Things aren't as bad as the old days (at least the music scene was better then) but they're well on the way.

  103. Here's an idea. Don't live in cities. Let the chumps do that. Not all the US is expensive but people tend to cluster where they cannot get ahead or stay when they should leave. I see immigrants make it every day while most of the failures were born here. You cannot change the nation but you can change your personal circumstance. If you need a job, force yourself to do what other people pay for in real life. Work off the books etc. You only have yourself and whoever is personally loyal to you for help. Remember the only secure jobs are government jobs including the armed forces, USPS, LEO etc so if at all practical choose those like them or not, because real life is about money as anyone without money finds out instantly.

  110. I don't need one and for what they cost I can drive my current vehicle fleet for another 20 years. I measure everything with money and as a techy and mechanic looking after one would be trivial but buying ANY new car is foolish unless you are rich. I paid off my homes by not wasting money on zhit I don't need bought to impress people I don't like. If solar would pay off I would install a freestanding array then charge vehicle and home in one shot but I don't NEED to nor would it sufficiently entertain me to do that. Nobody makes BEV trucks that do what I require and I don't like cars because their payload and towing ability are pathetic. With some planning (not that people plan, I sold used cars for a while convincing me most vehicle buyers are worse than clueless by choice) anyone outside the Rust Belt can buy a reliable truck for cash then keep it on the road for decades, which also gives you time to acquire a spare truck so when the first needs heavy maintenance or repair you just drive the other one. Add a car trailer and one can tow the other. If I got a new BEV I'd sell instantly like I would any other new ride then enjoy the MONEY instead. Many, many men do this as a matter of course since it's easy to find vehicles cheap that need work then fix them yourself. A new BEV doesn't fit that use case. A used one could be interesting but unless I score a repairable wreck for couch money I won't bother.

Long commutes are part of life if you want to succeed. That's worked since the late 1800s. My father and myself commuted from Jersey for many years before escaping.

The personal cure is not living there but too many people lack the imagination to leave punitively expensive, dangerous, deteriorating areas.   116. Looks like the old normal. Anyone who bothered to learn urban history would have no use for living in a major city because doing so is jailing yourself with some very bad company. Democrats decided it's their turn to wreck NYC (yet again, this is a normal historic cycle and no one reading this can stop it) so if you have any sense you'll move to a red state then keep it red. No one should be even slightly surprised. I saw this coming in the 1970s and escaped in the '80s. If you're still there and not rich, ask yourself why you're too scared to leave and explore the rest of the USA. You know it will only get worse. You know Democrat power will only increase. You know your choices are get out or become a victim. You know you cannot afford land ("owning" a piece of a co-op is not security). You know when the next economic crash hits you can easily be homeless. Choose wisely.
