@itrytobeanonymoustoo5289 You can escape it by locating in red states and (this is key) NOT in cities which in the US are intrinsically bad. The wise move is choosing an area with very slow or no growth and unified socially stable demographics, so I did.

Reasons do not exist to distract yourself with headphones etc in an urban environment, even a "safe" one because you lose situational awareness which is not the smartest choice in heavy traffic. Be or become street smart. A wise rule of thumb is "if it's silly, don't do that" because predators instantly sense the proverbial slowest zebra. If you're the "tourist" type you're already (with few exceptions who know it) lacking a combat mindset and tend to childlike ignorance. Best to visit (other) areas designed to keep you entertained and safe.

Dear tourists, there is nothing worth travelling to NYC to see. I lived in the area for decades. It used to be nice but go see the REST of the USA which has magnificent scenery. You can get just as drunk at a proper party (Oktoberfest in Germany makes Mardi Gras look like a trailer park) under more civilized conditions. Search "Paris shock syndrome" because it's similar. Naive people expect something cool and fun then reality hits hard. Wise Americans left the metro area decades ago but it went into brief remission and since there is no primary education here worthy of mention naive youngsters made the mistake of moving in. Things aren't as bad as the old days (at least the music scene was better then) but they're well on the way.
