  1. The entire war was a gross strategic mistake perpetuated by senior MILITARY and civilian leadership lies, but Washington couldn't wait to take the bait for other reasons. Invading a country kill one man when rolling like Mossad would have handled it sooner or later (consider how Israel hunted down the Munich killers) ensured enormous loss in blood, treasure and severe degradation in parts of our armed forces vital to NATION-STATE WAR (the important ones, constabulary wars are pure foolishness). America is incapable of producing competent political leaders because the public are simpletons who can't be arsed to learn anything more complex than sports scores. Nothing was learned from Viet Nam (I was alive then but too young to enlist) and nothing will be learned from Afghanistan so we'll do it again somewhere else in another twenty-something years. Still enjoyed my USAF career but it is certain as water is wet if you choose combat arms your sacrifices and those of your brothers and sisters will be "squandered valor" because the US cannot choose wars of choice wisely. Our society doesn't even know how to have that discussion so it does not happen. RIP to the fallen.

  3.  @buscottie  To be fair, most G.I.s don't actually CARE about background. (I'm a career USAF vet.) Young Americans like the rest of the country are not wired to care about foreign affairs, military affairs outside their personal taskings, and ESPECIALLY the social history of US constabulary wars and why we are unable to choose them wisely. I was alive when Viet Nam was completely forgotten and the meme that we should have just applied more firepower took over. Afghanistan will be collectively forgotten the same way and we will do it again in about 25 years after the military cadre who served have retired. The American public are too stupid to care and mostly drool on their shoes while thanking us for our service about which they know nothing useful by their own relentless choice.
