The real fault at Benghazi was the Ambassador for failing to DEMAND (or refuse the post which he was perfectly free to do) a fully equipped company-sized force with enough organic firepower to destroy thus deter any attack. The Ambassador died because he was stupid, inexcusable in a highly educated man who wasn't some slug off the block. Unfortunately he got decent people killed for his foolish choices. Light forces are too often sent by mistake (Gothic Serpent being the worst example of stupidly leaving armored firepower at home) when a site should have enough ORGANIC firepower and the men to use it. That lesson has never been learned because the US is far too easily seduced by the mystique of light forces. There was no reason not to bring a company-sized force with heavy weapons to Libya whose own citizens knew had no government or any semblance of security.
