  1. All railroads have issues long predating the trifles of current politics. There are no "good guys" and rail in the US is still not a great public concern. This incident will fade over time and not much will change.

  2. Civilized nations understand business is the enemy of all expense including safety unless that business makes and sells safety products. Railroads were notorious for bloody crashes until regulation and improved equipment standards gradually brought them under control. Industry needs tough ADVERSARIAL regulation to keep the SOBs in line, not rules drafted by its own lobbyists and enacted by owned politicians. Regulate, rule and command. Give appropriate orders then enforce them. The idea businesses can be trusted is purely their own invention though trusting morons easily fall for it. If an operation cannot be done with reasonable safety, stop doing it be it in the rail, aviation, trucking or maritime logistics industries. Workplace safety, CREW REST (exhaustion and sleep deficit can be worse impairment than intoxication), equipment monitoring, inspection and repair are all necessities and businesses choosing to neglect them should be fined and the people responsible dealt with accordingly.
