  1. When you have one vehicle it may as well be a "station wagon" and that is what SUVs really are in functional terms. US station wagons since the first were very similar to trucks and often had the same engines and transmissions. Room and easy entrance/exit from taller vehicles is a comfort bonus. The people who don't understand don't want to because most people are unable to understand anyone with a different vehicle use case than themselves.
