CHRISTmas is about Christ not consumerism. Folks who confuse consumerism with love have issues. Kids want to know they're valued, and teaching them wisdom by example and explanation is a gift that lasts for life.

@snave59 I do the same but do nearly all my own wrenching and since I chose to live were there's near zero rust I can drive my Ford and Chevy trucks as long as I care to. The newest is a 2000 bought used. When I like a vehicle I buy one (or more since at this point my bros and I give each other the used trucks we accumulate cheap) just like it that needs work and already own my "next" daily driver for very little money. I could afford a new truck but that's a waste of money. I ain't rich but retired debt free at 47 because I plan, plan then plan some more. (And by plan I do not mean the scummy scammy "financial advisors" who defile these threads.)

I would never support human suffering by adding more humans to suffer. Pets can be quite reasonable if their owner isn't crazy and is an ethical steward of their animals. Some like my chickens make delicious eggs which are a net profit for me vs buying expensive tasteless store eggs.

@sonyavincent7450 "Expensive" is relative. Not everyone is poor and leading a wise life pays off.

@Jane5720 My credit cards cost me nothing thanks to using my credit unions. Debit cards do not have the protections credit cards do. I pay mine off early and have done so for over 30 years I pay no interest. I refuse to own a debit card or any card directly connected to my bank accounts. I require MY personal action to pay my cards off so a scammer or hacker is limited to whatever they get before the credit union locks the card which they've done perfectly the three times it was needed. I require redundant backup so I've two credit unions (one in each state where I own property), multiple bank accounts so no single bank failure would unduly disrupt my finances, a Visa from each credit union which are not on autopay, and last but not least I still use paper checks for the simple reason a grid or credit card processors outage or natural disaster won't interrupt me paying local debts. This way is simple, EASY and reliable. Organization pays off. I'm far from rich and only net a bit under $70K/year but a third to half that is discretionary income.

@I007Dee I've only done that for decades and it works a treat.
