  1. No. Wars are historically normal. This age has been quite peaceful compared to last century with most wars taking place in backwaters. The idea the sky is falling is reflects historic illiteracy.

  2. Every nation should prepare for war. To so state should not be regarded as some emergency but a practical reminder in a nation whose survival for centuries is predicated on deterrence. Outsiders whose entire experience is distant from European reality should study Russian imperial history for those goals will never change being part of the cultural fabric not merely choices by individual administrations. European stability was brief and in living memory. The post-WWII stability required a much stronger NATO than the present debilitated husk. India has similar permanent threats on its borders, and while Russia is popular due to military aid it should be remembered that Russian colonial policy was even worse than British! Putin is to Ukraine as Winston Churchill was to India.
