@NicholasW943 female Custodes and female SM cheapen the setting in general. WH40k is supposed to be a tragic setting. the tragedy of the Emperor is that he was the greatest human that ever lived, but he was still fallible and made serious errors, enough errors for him to ultimately fail his mission. one of those problems is the fact that he was seemingly incapable of producing a gene-seed that would take with women, although, depending on your interpretation, it was by design so that the Space Marines could not reproduce and eventually form their own nation. perhaps a good choice considering what happened during the Horus Heresy. but then again, you could argue that the Heresy could have been avoided through other means. either way, it cheapens the setting greatly by removing the need to ask, "why?" when one hears that Space Marines/Custodes are only male, the natural human response is to ask "why." this is literally what makes a setting more in-depth and interesting. when one hears that SM/Custodes can be either sex, one simply shrugs their shoulders and moves on. the entire first paragraph I wrote in this comment wouldn't exist. the line of inquiry stops, and so does a writer's need to provide reasoning. the question of Space Marine sex restrictions is actually so important that it informs a huge amount of the decisions in the setting; for example, why the Adeptus Sororitas exist at all (if the Ecclesiarchy could summon SM they'd never need them, but the law says they cannot muster men bearing arms so they use women instead). it's not just some detail that doesn't significantly affect the setting, it is perhaps only one or two layers removed from the bedrock of the setting itself. the butterfly effect of changing this can't be understated. reams of worldbuilding would need to be retconned for the change to make sense

@TicosMinis It should bother you. It's not that the Custodes are female that is the problem. It's the casual disregard for the established worldbuilding. It's never just one detail, it's usually a few at first, and then if they realize that nobody really minds, they keep doing it. But even if it were one detail, the question then becomes "why did this one detail need to be changed if it was inconsequential?" I've seen it happen for many reasons other than political, and it always devalues the setting. Usually, it's just laziness and the perception that "if we change these details people will like it more." I always find myself wondering when this has ever worked. If the Clone Troopers from Star Wars prequel trilogy were revealed to have female members, for example, do you think this would suddenly make more people interested in Star Wars? Literally never happens.

@matsimurf_5900 Sororitas weren't proto-woke. it was more likely the result of someone's masochism fetish, judging by how they were treated in the lore for years until enough people complained about them losing and being murdered in horrific ways. the Matt Ward Bloodthirster episode alone was enough to make me ask myself if I was reading someone's guro fan-fiction.

@vermilion7777 they dominate in tabletop, but that's because tabletop is a pretty limited market. that doesn't mean that the majority of people who enjoy 40k content are tabletop players. the IP is simply too well known, even now, for that to be true. there's so much Warhammer content available that it simply doesn't make sense for the majority of people who consume it to be tabletop players, based on how limited and expensive that hobby is

@cheeseheadflipper Orks don't know what female is. Good luck explaining that concept to them, let alone having them believe in it with their heart and mind. To an Ork, the literal greatest expression of love is to kill you, because Orks reproduce when they die.
