I'm an American who lives in Texas, who also can't drive due to a disability I was born with. I can't help but agree with a lot of your points. Especially after nearly being hit with a car more times than I can count. But those close encounters were only in my adult independent life. When I was in high school, my saving grace was that one of my friends had access to a car, and was a decent driver, so we could do stuff when we wanted. Otherwise, the most I did to walk, was walk the dog along an undeveloped area close to the neighborhood. When I first graduated college and started working, I had to walk about 30 minutes from my train station to my home or vice versa. Eventually, I found a place farther from downtown that also had a lot of convenient amenities within a 15 minute walk and now I find it really hard to leave this particular condo.
