One super interesting thing I found by reading the diary of Franz Schmidt, a German executioner from the 16th century (actually quite a progressive one, too, who tried to give his victims cleaner deaths when he could) was that families of the condemned would beg and plead the executioner directly for them not to be hanged, because the noose was for base, lowly criminals, and to be beheaded was an "honorable" death. This was noted in his diary as "a favor," i.e. "beheaded by sword as a favor." Another thing he did was usually ignore the severe, "poetic" or Biblical means of executions especially for women in favor of more humane methods of execution. The most notable was probably that the proscribed punishment for infanticide was drowning in the nearest river.
