Ironically the long-term outcome of this -- less police officers -- is that more criminals will die. Despite qualified immunity and the benefits it brings to cops, a private citizen has no obligation to bring in a criminal for a fair trial. If they are dead, they also cannot defend themselves in court. They might have a lawyer representing their family, but they'll never get their side of the story. I'm not saying I feel sorry for them, mind you, but not every case is clear-cut black and white self-defense. As much as people shit on cops for shooting suspects, the only reason that private citizens aren't doing the shooting is that they are not directly involved with the crime.

It's not a "great thing," it means that more crime is occurring and it is being obstructed by random citizens, not cops. It is a necessary thing however.

@tubesism Very few struggling people in the US genuinely feel like they have to steal things. They do it because it's easy or because it is fun.

@tubesism That sword cuts both ways buddy. Do you have a source to show that all people who steal are just good-hearted, misunderstood people? You do realize that stealing isn't even a good way to make money? There's no shortage of employment if you're not picky. Or welfare, for that matter. Not to mention you'll just be imprisoned eventually.
