@Andreas-gh6is Lawful firearm usage in defense against crime far outnumbers illegal firearm use in the pursuit of a crime in the US. You'd have to be utterly naive to believe that making guns illegal would make them simply go away. How long are we willing to wait while criminals prey upon us in the interim period for the 3rd largest country in the world by landmass to track down every illegal firearm and destroy them before we're safe? This isn't Japan, Australia or the UK, we're not an island and we have a long history of firearms usage. Removing firearms from the American populace is a virtually impossible task, we can't even police our own populace as it stands and one of the top political issues in the zeitgeist at the moment is "you know what? it isn't hard enough for the police, we need to make it harder by cutting their funding." You can't have it both ways, either allow people to defend themselves or create a police state so they can be defended.

@runningbear1982 The implication that only the armed forces should carry weapons is blatantly un-American.

@Andreas-gh6is Ah yes, the all-too-common-case of my gun jumping out of my holster and shooting my dad. How could I forget?

@spottheborgcat6523 I got my mom a cross body travel bag like the one I carry, it has a hook for the zipper so it can't be ripped open and has a strap reinforced with metal lining so it can't be cut. She loves it and uses it now. The brand is Travelon in case you're curious. Their gear was designed for people who are traveling and want to keep their stuff safe from theft but they offer bags with built-in holsters and such as well. I find it's very useful as someone who does not drive and thus can't carry a car's worth of junk around with him everywhere I go.

Well, this video is more like a case against open carry without a retention holster than open carry period. However, I do believe that open carry is a bad idea regardless, unless you are an active security guard. It's basically like playing poker with your cards face-up on the table. With the added downside that there's a high chance that some idiot on your table might get offended that you have the ace of spades. No reason to do it.

@Rosterized "Coming from a European's perspective..." Great way to make me discard the rest of your post. And now you probably think I'm a bigot. But wait just a moment. Think about how you'd respond if this was a thread about your domestic politics and I said "Well, America obviously does this better. Let me tell you how America does it." You clearly don't know very much about our history as your last statement implies that there was some central organization handing out weapons in the year 1776, so why comment? The right to bear arms was enshrined because... surprise surprise, everyone was already bearing arms. There was never a point in American history where most people did not have guns. Or pre-American history for that matter.
