@juliuscaesar5593 I don't think it's pride necessarily, but it sounds like for both of them that crime was a way to escape an even shittier situation. In that perspective, the criminal life was indeed a good time in their life, because the alternative would have been worse.

I don't know about the UK but here in the US rural police can be quite obnoxious, especially if you are a visitor to a town that doesn't get many visitors. They might assume you're a drifter up to no good or maybe they just don't like you because they don't know you. On the other hand, big cities tend to have well-funded police departments (depending on the city of course) and thus, more professional officers, often with more experience
