  2. The term for Japanese shut-in you're looking for is hikkikomori by the way. There's a fair bit of media highlighting it. There was a very popular indie adventure game in the late 2000s called Yume Nikki about a terminally depressed hikkikomori girl who spends all her time lucid dreaming, and it's about her exploring those lucid dreams. The art seems cute at first, with some psychedelic elements, but it shocks the player with sudden disturbing visuals, and the ending is extremely dark. There's a lot of room for interpretation on possible trauma that the main character experienced. Japan seems like a pretty high pressure society, and so it's natural then that there would be people who just want to retreat from it.
