It's just like any community with budding teenagers. There are old weirdos who orbit it looking for the vulnerable and impressionable minds to take advantage of. Anime really just describes cartoons from Japan. Like all cartoons, it spans the gap from completely normal stuff to the most degenerate thing you've ever seen. It does have some common features, like perhaps a lack of distinctly "Christian" values due Japan not being predominantly Christian, but ironically although crossdressing is a theme in some anime (targeted at older audiences) it's usually played off for laughs and fantasy. Virtually no Japanese person would think the cosmetic surgery we think of as "transitioning" to be an effective procedure. Indeed, some Japanese men already look so feminine that they can crossdress and pass as women even without surgery -- which is also the source of the recurring joke. I think it would be more intelligent to use Occam's Razor here and assume that the pronoun brainwashing camp had more of an effect than the cartoons watched by preteens widely all over the world

It's not just anime, it's also comics and other nerd subcultures. Cults and cult-like organizations prey on the vulnerable and nerd subcultures are also a haven for the ostracized and emotionally downtrodden. Now D&D is suffering from it too.
