Actually the sentence before that is even more important. "Marty ate more pizza than Luis." It is provided as a given fact. Any lecture about how to read word problems in math or science will teach you that you're supposed to take this as an absolute truth and not "HAHA, GOTCHA! I WAS LYING THE WHOLE TIME!" Whoever wrote this question failed at step 1.

@r_emll I've literally never seen a math question where you're expected to throw out a statement given as fact and I have a feeling you haven't either. Extraneous information, certainly. Lies, no. Either way there is no reasonable way an adult, let alone a child around age 9, could figure out that he's just supposed to assume "Marty ate more pizza" is a bald-faced lie when it is entirely possible.

Yeah, the question encourages abstract thinking and implies there is a real answer. That it isn't a trick question. It's a shame that some teachers can't even take the time to think about the questions they gives to their own students. Then again I've seen asinine teacher behavior at every level of education. One of my college professors typo'd a question on a digital logic exam. The question was about machine language, 1's and 0's. You had to interpret a block of 32 1's and 0's manually, to figure out what instruction it meant. Obviously, a typo completely changes the outcome of this question. He admitted he made a typo then also said he wouldn't be giving any points back on the exam. The whole class looked at one another in disbelief. Of course, 9 years into my software career I think the entire question was idiotic, but if you're going to put it on the exam, at least do it correctly.
