@LIFTANDFIX What's your point? Court is supposed to be there for us so we can have fair resolution to a disagreement. If you're not even going to show up to argue after disagreeing, then what's the point of disagreeing? As a pedestrian I don't really have that much pity for irresponsible drivers. I bet she sucks at driving anyway.

She really is showing her "country girl" nature here. Signing the document isn't an agreement to pay the ticket, it is an agreement to either show up in court or pay the ticket. She can show up in court at that time to not pay anything; no officers waste time showing up to city court for traffic violations and when the cop doesn't show up, they lose by default. She can also pay a small time lawyer a paltry fee (like $25) to represent her and show up to court in her stead. The cop looks pathetic not being able to wrestle a 60-something year old woman into handcuffs, but she's an idiot.

@Wijnand Ross The subpoena they give you is basically a formality. Your traffic violation will be logged by them and you'll default to having to pay the ticket if you don't show up in court. Strictly speaking, the cop can't let her go until she signs the subpoena. However I've heard from some cops that many will simply write "Refused to sign" on the signature line and issue them the fine via mail as if they never showed in court. If you refuse to pay then a warrant is created for your arrest. Either this guy was new, or their department is very strict about getting signatures.

When you break traffic laws you're running the risk of getting a ticket. Many cops will let you off with a warning. She got unlucky, or more likely, she might have been rude to the cop before the clip started in this video (many cops unfortunately aren't that fair-minded and will decide to ticket you based on how you act during the stop). What she was about to sign wasn't even an agreement to pay the ticket, it was simply a subpoena agreeing that she or a lawyer would show up in court to contest the ticket. Refusing to sign this is quite unreasonable. If she is 60+ years old and this incredibly stubborn, she should at least know how to deal with police a little bit better. Seems likely to me that she didn't even have plans to fix her tail light. Now, it is sad that this guy resorted to using a taser because he was mad about being kicked by an old lady. But she deserved her arrest.
